
Professor Wagner provides strategic law and policy advice to national governments, international organizations and the private sector. He is a sought after commentator in national and international media and hosts The Civic Podcast.
Professor Wagner’s areas of expertise include international trade law and governance, international peace and security, as well as German Law, US and Australian constitutional law. He divides his research on the weaponization of trade and the challenges and opportunities of cellular agriculture, with a focus on cultivated meat.
Leadership
Professor Wagner has held numerous leadership positions and has launched a number of strategic innovations including as Founding Director of the Transnational Law and Policy Centre at UOW Law. He serves as the Director of Research at UOW Law and has spearheaded the curriculum review and digital innovation for the School of Law.
Professor Wagner has taught extensively as an award-winning teacher at the University of Wollongong.
Prior to joining UOW Law, he was on the faculties of the University of Warwick and the University of Miami.

Service
Professor Wagner served as the immediate past Executive Vice President for the Society of International Economic Law (SIEL), as Investment Law Expert for the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), co-founded and is executive editor of the Journal of Law & Geoeconomics and sits on the board of prestigious academic journals and not for profit organisations.
Education
Professor Wagner received his Master of the Science of Law from Stanford University, and qualified with a magister juris internationalis and erstes juristisches Staatsexamen, both with distinction, from the University of Giessen, Germany.
Professor Wagner holds honorary fellowships at the Mandela Institute, University of the Witwatersrand, School of Law, Johannesburg, South Africa and Universitas Diponegoro, Bandung, Indonesia.

Markus is happiest in nature, and enjoys hiking, cycling, travel and photography. In a past life he cycled from Germany to China.
